CAUTION! FLIPPED CLASSROOM AHEAD!

"Devlog 07" by Kit09 Studio

The Flipped Classroom approach, although may not be suitable for the entire education populace, is a well-designed alternative to the standard teaching approaches. The general idea is that the learning happens outside the classroom and related tasks, activities are conducted inside the classroom. Seems like the exact opposite of what we have in our classrooms today. This approach brings in a new perspective towards teaching and conducting activities by stepping outside the standard teaching environments. Thus, the students' learning can be enhanced or entirely replaced by the flipped classroom approach. After studying their subject outside their classroom, which includes online classes, the students may complete worksheets or some other related teaching material to reinforce their learning. This may result as a more engaging and efficient learning method for the students as it is an unconventional yet simple and fun way of teaching.

As an example of flipped approach material my partner (Eray Sezer) and I have prepared a video for young learners about the "Games and Hobbies" Unit from MEB's English coursebook for 5th graders. In the video, various games and hobbies and images related to each are depicted and narrated by both me and Eray subsequently. We both put mutual effort in writing the script, sourcing visual material, editing and VA. While some of the images are pulled from websites like WikiHow, other imagery was made by an AI tool, emphasizing the significance of AI in both art end education nowadays. The video was made using Adobe Premiere Pro 2020, and even though using Sony Vegas Pro was more appealing for a project such as this, I personally have more experience in the program compared to other programs or websites, so we decided to stick with Adobe. In the video, we decided to use royalty-free YouTube library BGM to avoid any trouble with any copyright owners. As for the VA itself, the overall voice volume seems to be lower than expected at the end of production, prompting us to come up with subtitles for the video. This was easy problem to fix as YouTube provides a built-in subtitle generation and editing tool within its uploading platform. We also prepared an Wordwall game QR code and link for the students to check out at the end of the video. The game simply revolves around matching the names of games and hobbies with their corresponding images.

Overall, the production and research processes were fun and engaging for the both of us. Even though we encountered several minor problems during production, my previous experience in both video and movie production seemed to have come in handy. We were glad to have such an engaging assignment, and would like create similar teaching materials for the flipped classroom and similar approaches in the future.
